GLFx Nairobi held a Kids Fun Day in Lucky Summer on Saturday, 17th December, 2022 in collaboration with Tempo Arts Centre. This was a follow up event to the Sanaa na Mazingira Festival 2022 held a week prior at the same venue.
The kids focused event kicked off at 10:00am. There were approximately 80 children in attendance, majority of them below the age of 13.
Activities:
- Song and Dance
The day started off with a song and dance segment to get the children engaged and involved. The kids themselves took turns leading in popular songs and bursting out dance moves at every opportunity. What was scheduled for half an hour ended up lasting 50 minutes and even then had to be cut short in the interest of time.

2. Conversation on Restoration
Thereafter, we had a conversation regarding what the children already knew about conversation, what they needed to know and answered their lingering questions on Restoration. We learnt that the community around Tempo Art Centre had done a brilliant job in emphasizing the importance of Tree Planting. However, there was a gap to bridge on the value of Tree Growing and proper means of waste disposal. We shared a few simple to understand pointers on why Tree growing was crucial and how to do it as well as the need to collect all Waste at designated points.
3. Painting
We shared manila papers and paint brushes and challenged the kids to paint what their ideal environment would look like. The hour-long exercise produced some amazing results and allowed us a peek into the kind of world our audience wanted to live in. The kids retained possession of all their artwork after the event was over.

4. Adopt a Tree
To cap off the event, every child got to plant a tree of their own along the banks of Nairobi River and within Tempo Grounds. Furthermore, they committed to nurturing the trees over the school holidays as a way of practicing Tree Growing. Each child was to watch over their own tree and would replace them in the event they died over the holidays.

The event wound up at 3pm after GLFx Nairobi members present, Tempo Arts Centre members present and the kids shared snacks made available by GLFx Nairobi. We left with a promise to return and visit the Adopt a Tree program.
