POSITION OVERVIEW
Title: Communications Fellow
Location: Nairobi, Kenya – Work from Home with occasional field visits
Status: Full-time (40 hours per week) with flexible working days, including occasional weekends as needed.
INTRODUCTION
Kijani Resilience was founded in March 2020 by hosting and starting the Global Landscapes Forum program known as GLFx Nairobi Chapter focusing on youth and women restoration in Kenya. Guided by core values of multi-stakeholder collaboration and data-driven approaches, Kijani Resilience develops and implements restoration programs that empower communities to restore sustainable, multifunctional landscapes while generating income. We believe in the transformative power of community-driven action to address climate challenges and build resilient, thriving ecosystems.
As part of our efforts to strengthen the overall digital outreach of Kijani Resilience, with a particular focus on the GLFx Nairobi Program—including a digital campaign for the Oloolua Forest—we are seeking a dynamic communications professional to boost our visibility and engagement across platforms
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Communications Fellow will play a key role in expanding Kijani Resilience’s digital presence across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, LinkedIn, and the organization’s website.
Working closely with internal teams and external partners, the Fellow will ensure that all digital communications align with Kijani Resilience’s mission, effectively engage diverse audiences, and raise awareness of ongoing programs and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Development & Social Media Management
- Create high-quality, engaging visual, video, and written content to captivate our audience, enhance visibility, and drive meaningful engagement and community action.
- Develop and implement content calendars aligned with Kijani Resilience’s mission and advocacy goals.
- Research and apply emerging social media trends to enhance strategy.
- Conduct thorough research and provide copy editing support to ensure all content is accurate, clear, and aligned with Kijani Resilience’s voice and messaging. This includes refining written materials for social media, blogs, reports, and campaigns, as well as verifying facts and sourcing relevant information to strengthen storytelling and advocacy efforts.
- Monitor and engage with online audiences, responding to comments and messages in a timely and consistent manner.
- Analyze performance metrics and adjust strategies to increase reach and engagement.
Website Content & Updates
- Create and upload written content for the website, including blogs, articles, event recaps, and project updates.
- Ensure timely updates that reflect social media campaigns, key activities, and events.
- Maintain alignment in tone, message, and branding across digital platforms.
Campaigns
- Lead the execution of digital campaigns, including Oloolua Forest restoration campaign and global environmental observances (e.g., Forest Day, Water Day).
Community Engagement
- Collaborate with partners and program teams to generate compelling storytelling content.
- Highlight the voices and experiences of communities, stakeholders, and beneficiaries through digital channels.
Monitoring & Reporting
- Track and analyze social media and web performance using tools like Google Analytics and social media insights platforms.
- Prepare quarterly reports summarizing key metrics, insights, and recommendations for improvement.
- Maintain clear documentation of communications activities and outcomes to inform strategic planning.
Field Visits & Content Gathering
- Occasionally travel to project sites to collect content, conduct interviews, and capture multimedia materials for digital use.
- Coordinate with field teams to schedule content collection during official visits and events.
Additional Responsibilities
- Support other communications-related tasks as needed.
- Take on additional roles or projects based on the Fellow’s interests and skills, in alignment with Kijani Resilience’s evolving needs.
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Education in a relevant discipline; candidates must be under the age of 35.
- Strong writing and communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated interest or understanding of environmental and climate change issues is an asset.
- Proficiency with digital communication tools, including MS Office, social media platforms, basic graphic design, and content creation software (e.g., Canva); familiarity with creating social media cards, posters, and short videos.
- Knowledge of media trends and digital content strategies.
- Familiarity with WordPress or similar web content management systems.
- Ability to work independently with initiative, creativity, and a willingness to experiment with new formats and ideas.
- Experience in report writing and monitoring processes, or a strong interest in developing these skills.
- Experience or interest in editing and copywriting specifically for social media platforms.
ASSESSMENT PROCESS
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a desk review, an assessment exercise, and/or a competency-based interview.
TERMS OF CONTRACT
- This position will be offered as a consultancy contract for a period of six months, including a one-month probation period.
- Please note that this position is open only to Kenyan nationals currently residing in Kenya.
- The monthly compensation is KES 52,000, (inclusive of tax).
- A KES 6,500 allowance (Included in the monthly compensation) to cover the use of a personal laptop and internet connection.
- The Fellow may dedicate up to one day per week to capacity development activities such as training, research, or attending relevant events. Please note that no additional funding is available for these activities.
- The role includes access to virtual collaboration spaces, networking opportunities with other GLFx chapters and Youth in Landscapes communities, a certificate of completion and a reference letter at the end of the contract.
- Candidates must have access to a personal laptop and reliable internet connection for the duration of the fellowship.
