Waste Management Training by GLFx Nairobi

Following previous community dialogue on Sustainable Waste Management, GLFx Nairobi organized a 2-day workshop on waste management which was offered by Rock Paper to seven representatives from various waste management groups in the Kariobangi Waste Management Alliance. The groups included Sauti link, Shirikisho, Kamash, Humble and Samba. The sessions were held in Kinoo at Rock Paper stores.

The trainers from Rock Paper covered topics on how to recycle/handle white paper waste, pitching ideas and composting of organic waste. During the morning session, the participants were taught the various ways in which white paper waste could be transformed into viable commodities ranging from photo portraits, key holders, wall clocks among other things depending on the creativity level applied. The participants were then divided into groups of two and then with the guidance of the trainers from rock paper they each worked on a sample product as part of implementing the practical bit of the training.

The participants were thereafter taken through organic waste management, its uses and how to pitch proposals to partners or donors. Using a sample from a nearby market, a live demonstration on how to prepare compost from organic waste was done. The participants were then given organic waste and prepared a compost sample which was to be reviewed the next day to check on its viability.

After this, the team was taken through a session on how to pitch their ideas to potential investors. The participants were then divided into groups of two and each group was given a potential problem in the society to discuss a potential pitch. A representative from each group was then given a chance to pitch the issue to the audience stating the problem at hand, how they were going to solve it and then finally what they required from the potential investor that they were pitching to. The trainers rectified a few challenges that came up during pitching but commended the participants on how well they had done. The session ended at around four in the evening and we parted with the team.
