GLFx Nairobi Watch Party

GLFx Nairobi held its GLF Climate Watch Party at The University of Nairobi on Saturday, November 12th, 2022. The event attracted a total of 49 participants from four different universities around the city: Cooperative University, Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology and the host institution, The University of Nairobi. Jared Onyango, the chairperson of Tempo Art Centre, was an honoured guest.

Of the 49 students and recent graduates in the audience, 20 were female, while 29 were male. Their ages were concentrated between 18 and 25, with only three participants being older than 25.

Activities:

The watch party was divided into three sessions.

1. Land Restoration in Africa.

This was a viewing of the session by Regreening Africa, a discussion on their work in and around Africa. The purpose of this was to expose the students to the restoration work taking place outside of Kenya’s national borders as well as its impact. Our Co-Coordinator, Laura, conducted a very lively Q&A session thereafter.

2. Inspiration Stories

This was an information session that sought to separate fact from myth with regard to the science of Climate Change. Furthermore, the session showcased the work that restoration stewards had been doing throughout the year and what they hoped the ongoing COP 27 would achieve. The purpose of this session was to pique the interest of the audience so that they may be inspired to make an effort to interrogate every article they read on climate change to determine its accuracy.

3. Climate Finance

There was a session on Climate Finance at GLF Climate. However, after a preview of the session, we felt that the session wouldn’t be friendly to an audience without any background information on Climate Finance. We therefore asked our (other) Co-coordinator -Akinyi Chemutai- to develop an introductory course to Climate Finance and give a presentation instead. This allowed us to customise the session to our audience’s level of understanding. Similarly, we were able to field a lot more questions.
